Coaching a youth soccer league team can be one of the most rewarding
experiences of your life. If you want to make the most of it, you'll need to learn the rules of
soccer, along with strategies for getting the most out of your players.
Soccer is primarily a game that is played with the feet. The only person allowed to
use his hands is your goalie, or your other players may also use their hands when throwing the ball into play after
it has been knocked out of bounds. If you have played basketball, several concepts of the game also apply to
soccer. Effective passing, the give-and-go, man-to-man, and zone defense are all concepts that apply to soccer as
well. The most effective and successful soccer coaches have practice methods that prepare their players for
games, while still making it fun for everyone.
There are two basic types of soccer leagues for kids: recreational, in which most
kids play, and select, which consists of skilled soccer players who often travel to participate in tournaments.
No matter which level you are coaching, the basics remain the same in preparing your kids to play their
best.
Before conducting your first practice, there are several things you need to have to
ensure time is spent effectively. Always have several cones on hand, the kind you see on the roadways, as these are
used in several drills. Have plenty of water, balls, shin guards, and don't be afraid to ask parents of the kids to
help as assistants. You should have a whistle that is loud enough to get everyone's attention, as kids have been
known to get distracted during practice. Don't forget to have a timer of some kind available so you can keep track
of practice and game simulations.
The best thing you can as a youth soccer coach is to keep your drills simple
and encourage all kids to pay attention. Make your drills fun, and you will keep a child's
attention longer. All kids, no matter their skill level, should touch the ball at least 100 times during each
practice. Most kids will play soccer only up until their teen years, so soccer excellence is not as important as
teaching team play, respect for your opponent, and learning how to work hard.
These tips should help you get off to a fast start in coaching your soccer youth
league team.
